aesthetically and involves both skill and creativity.
Classified according to technique, the diverse
manifestations of art include the decorative, plastic and

dance and poetry are among the many different types of
art.
Painting is an art form that dates back tens
of thousands of years and which can be performed with
different media. Oil painting, for example, utilizes
pigments suspended in drying oil, such as linseed,
poppyseed, walnut or safflower oil. Oil paint dries
slowly, blends together wonderfully on the canvas or
other carrier, can be applied in layers and provides
great depth of color.
Oil paint can be applied to various
surfaces, including linoleum, wood, slate and paper but
ever since the 1500s canvas has been the most popular.
While wooden panels provide a solid surface ideal for
detail work, they ' re more expensive, heavier and may warp or
split. Linen is the traditional canvas material; however
cotton is widely used since it ' s more economical.
